As usual, my routine back then was pretty much the same every day. I went to my internship in the morning, came home in the afternoon, and repeated everything again the next day. Sometimes it was fun when there were a lot of activities, but when things got quiet and I just had to wait for my teaching schedule, honestly, it could get pretty boring. So whenever I had free time, even before break time, I always looked for something “productive” to do. Which basically meant… getting coffee at the stall across the street😄
I usually went there with my boarding house friend. We even made an agreement so we wouldn’t spend too much time hanging out there: “Let’s keep it between 30–60 minutes only.” Even though, in reality, we somehow kept improving that limit into almost two hours… hehehe.
That day, I only stayed there for about an hour before heading back to my internship place. When I arrived, I sat down casually in front of the office with my friend. Not long after that, Cutina and her two friends walked over from the side and sat near us too.
At first, we were just having a normal conversation. Then, in the middle of it, Cutina suddenly asked me,
“Are you good at badminton?”
Because my pride as a guy was still pretty high at that moment, I pretended to think for a second before answering,
“Well, I’m good at sports in general.”
Honestly… I just gave the confident answer first. Whether I could actually prove it later was a different story🫠
The funny thing was, Cutina didn’t seem fully convinced. She even asked one of my female classmates about my badminton skills. Luckily, my friend immediately replied,
“Firdaus is good at it.”
And in my head, I was like, “Wow, that support gimmick is actually helping xixixi.”
Then somehow, from that random conversation, we ended up planning a badminton match for that night. The teams were me and Cutina versus Tara and Ani. And somehow, everyone immediately agreed to it.
Since we were going to be teammates, I tried to practice some simple strategies with Cutina beforehand. From my perspective… she could mostly only hit the shuttlecock if it came directly toward her. So yeah, her skills were still pretty basic🫠
But the funny part was how competitive she suddenly became. At one point, she looked at me and said in a half-threatening tone,
“If we lose to Tara and Ani, you better watch out.”
I just laughed and replied,
“Relax, we’ll be fine.”
And after she said that, somehow the atmosphere felt more exciting. I don’t really know why, but I suddenly felt like I didn’t want to disappoint her. Then I caught myself thinking,
“Hmmm… this feeling is probably just a gimmick, right? 😌”
